process documentation: website redesign

working on website redesign

process documentation

  1. recognize the website needs update
    • old website is no-longer who I am. beautiful archive of an old version of myself. is not my current self.
  2. ideate.
    • what is the purpose of my website and intention of a new website? how do I lean it all back to the purpose
      • my website itself is a work of art. it should reflect my work/aesthetics, encourage connection, and be an experience of what it is like to work with me.
      • task #1: create artist statement to use as the basis of this work of art.
        • artist statement (link to developing artist statement post)
        • use this artist statement to make all decisions. this is the core value of my work and my website.
    • explore other websites of creatives.
      • what are other artist websites like? how do they share their work?
      • what websites do I like (not specifically artists)? is it the aesthetics? the interaction? be specific
    • visuals
      • develop the visual identity of my website.
        • use pinterest, create a board
        • explore using cosmos (thanks for the recc cory)
  3. create list.
    • using airtable, create list of everything that needs to be done, with self-imposed deadlines, priorities, completion statuses, notes, etc
      • use airtable features to create a documentation/tracking link in airtable to better keep an eye out on elements
  4. execute.
    • code using html from scratch, also using bootstrap to create an easy mobile nav menu.
    • i want to push my creativity and skillset, so google any issues that come up and use common sense.
  5. continue to execute
  6. continue to execute
  7. meet deadlines and rearrange if situations come up
  8. condense and simplify as deadlines approach if they cannot be met
  9. prioritize
    • again, based on values reprioritize time and resources by going back to what best fits the intention, value, artist statement, the concept. prioritize based off which is most effective and impactful to the original purpose.
  10. get external feedback.
    • speak with people who have websites I admire, industry professionals, friends I trust, to get feedback on my website.
  11. document
    • in the middle of this process, I created an airtable project tracker, where at the end of the day I write a brief update that included:
      • wins for the day
      • ways to keep that momentum going
      • pain points for the day
      • solutions i attempted, and ideas i have for solutions
      • a to do list for the following day
    • update /this/ (how meta) blog post as I go

Ok I’m in the middle of this right now and I am sick of it. It is so much work to get everything ive done all in one place. I understand why people choose to just live a simple life now. Its so much less emotions.

I love to create work that is engaging and interactive, so I spent a day teaching myself css annimation and javascript applying it and now I feel like the profile page is so much more accurate to how my work is.

Im recognizing after I spent so long on a page, leaving the page is hard… and knowing there are other ideas I want to implement in the future is part of the process of delayed gratification, and reducing perfectionism.

Hard Skills

  • Javascript Coding (continuation)
  • HTML DIV’s, Relative VS Absolute Positioning, Inline vs Block vs Flex Display, and Flex Display
  • CSS Class vs ID overrides and Priorities

Soft Skills

  • Prioritizing
